Festivals beyond Everest Mani Rimdu

Dashain and Tihar are two key festivals in Nepal celebrated by local communities of the Himalayan region. These two Himalayan festivals come in the months of October and November according to the Lunar Calender System.  Dashain is observed for 15 Days in line and represents Goddess Durga as she emerged victorious after killing Mahishaasura. Celebrations include family reunion, with placement of Red Colored Vermillion straight on the forehead. The whole vibe becomes scintillating and kaleidoscopic with sky covered with kites while the local Nepalese communities live their times in absorbing ambiance eating traditional recipes.

Tihar like Dashain is yet another Himalayan festival worthy of participation and is observed over 5 days. The festival is about rejoicing the life with family and friends.  The bonding continues forever and there is an element of thankfulness towards the animal world.  Besides, the locals in Nepalese communities get together for observing the worship of Goddess Laxmi.

Day I of the festivity is dedicated to Crow, the messenger of Yama. The Day 2 is observed for dog – the gate keeper of Yama, and the Day 3 is observed for Holy Cow, which represent the vehicle of Goddess Laxmi. The Day 4th is dedicated to Ox, when Govardhan Puja is performed, and The Day 5 culminates into Bhai Tika, where sisters pay respect to their brothers.  All through the festival, the valley and hill people decorate their homes with lights.  There is also ceremony of dancing and singing, which results in euphony.

Life for the Himalayan communities in the Kingdom of Nepal is nothing less than a blender. Celebrations continue for the entirety and for people from outside the land locked country, these subtle moments are transformative in nature.
